Battersea Power Station
To activate Battersea Power Station commercially, developers required a high-capacity anchor experience within its northwest chimney. The Story Engineers joined during design development, deploying customised 3D simulation software to resolve critical spatial, lighting, and acoustic constraints. We integrated a responsive media ecosystem spanning Turbine Hall A, a 360-degree media room, and the 109-metre glass elevator ascent. This digital validation phase eliminated on-site integration risks, delivering a reliable, high-traffic cultural asset from day one.

Activating Historic Infrastructure Through Cultural Storytelling
The architectural brief demanded a multi-part visitor journey that balanced historical storytelling with the structural sensitivities of a listed Art Deco landmark. The primary challenge lay in creating a high-impact digital attraction that respected Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s original architecture while functioning as a high-capacity asset. To draw crowds into the newly transformed retail destination, the narrative needed to transition seamlessly from low-level exhibition spaces up into the building’s northwest chimney. This required translating complex industrial themes into physical, interactive media installations that engaged families and design enthusiasts alike. The technical infrastructure had to deliver an exceptional narrative arc without overwhelming the raw beauty of the historic site, demanding an absolute balance between engineering utility and premium aesthetic integration.

Calibrating Technical Systems Within Volumetric Constraints
To realise this vision, The Story Engineers deployed customised 3D simulation software during early concept and detailed design phases. This framework allowed our engineering team to construct real-time visual and audio mock-ups, testing projection fields against historic stonework. Virtual testing proved essential for adapting hardware layouts to the building’s massive windows, which regularly flooded the turbine halls with shifting natural light. We engineered an architectural layout encompassing interactive tables, dynamic lighting sculptures, and large-scale transparent LED displays. For the media room, a four-wall projection mapping system was calibrated alongside spatial audio and show-lighting rings inside the chimney. Operating under rigorous construction regulations, this off-site methodology eliminated physical installation risks and optimised systems long before site deployment.
Delivering Long-Term Reliability And Commercial Value
Marking its third anniversary, the destination recently expanded its digital landscape with operational models and automated soundscapes that continue to yield stable commercial performance. The chimney attraction has logged nearly 20,000 ascents, serving as a vital anchor for an estate that has surpassed 26 million total visitors. This sustained reliability under continuous operation proves the precise value of embedding technical design consultancy from the earliest strategic phases of a project. Working alongside the delivery partners, The Story Engineers successfully bridged the gap between a complex architectural vision and an enduring commercial asset.
