Skyframe London
In 2018, The Story Engineers integrated a 180-square-metre digital ceiling into London's Fen Court, transforming a historic thoroughfare into a front-serviceable digital art venue. The installation evolved in 2025 into Skyframe London, a free and non-commercial civic arts platform. By introducing interactive installations like the Skyframe Piano and nurturing emerging talent through the Skyframe Awards, the project converted a corporate shortcut into a thriving, community-driven cultural landmark.

Reimagining Historic Public Thoroughfares Through Soaring Scale
Generali Real Estate presented us with a distinct architectural ambition for their first London development: a historic medieval passageway running through Fen Court, linking Fenchurch Street with Fenchurch Avenue. The design required a massive overhead digital canopy to link the central walkway to a rooftop garden, framing the sky for passers-by. The core problem was architectural and operational. We needed to construct a colossal digital ceiling that could display complex live media feeds while remaining highly sustainable and easy to maintain within a busy, uncovered public highway.
Engineering Front Serviceable Suspended Networks Overhead
The Story Engineers brought this structural vision to life by integrating a 180-square-metre digital display, suspended 9.5 metres above the ground. Comprising 540 custom panels, the entire network was engineered to be entirely front-serviceable to ensure rapid, low-friction maintenance. Rather than running heavy independent cables, we routed live feeds from rooftop 4K PTZ cameras through a centralized processing system, combining hardware matrix routing with software control. This technical decision allowed the screen to display dynamic seasonal media artwork or shift to live camera content instantly, achieving frame-accurate synchronisation across the massive overhead canvas.
Translating Scale Into Weekly Civic Engagement
What began as an architectural intervention has become a shared platform for togetherness. Reintroduced in 2025 as Skyframe London, the non-commercial platform invites true public ownership. The introduction of the interactive Skyframe Piano attracted around 1,000 people a week to step forward and play, turning musical notes into real-time generative skyscapes. Later that year, the launch of the Skyframe Awards successfully provided emerging UK digital artists with technical support to launch new public works. We loved collaborating with the visionary teams at Fen Court to push the boundaries of civic technology. Today, the installation stands as a reliable, living cultural landmark that continues to evolve alongside its city.
