LONDON MUSEUM OPENS IN NOVEMBER: SIX YEARS OF STORY ENGINEERING
After nearly five decades at London Wall, London Museum is undergoing a profound transformation – relocating to a new home in Smithfield. The museum’s highly anticipated, free permanent galleries will open on 28 November 2026, and will tell the story of London and its people from the prehistoric era to present day.

Taking shape within two historic market buildings, this milestone redevelopment stands as one of Europe’s largest cultural infrastructure projects. Built over a decade as a world-leading green museum shaped by 100,000 people from London and beyond, the transformation returns the formerly derelict Victorian General Market to public use for the first time in over three decades. The adjacent 1960s Poultry Market is set to follow in 2028 as home to the museum’s temporary exhibitions spaces, learning centre and a collection store. Once complete, the new site will allow the museum to showcase more of its collection than ever before, welcoming millions of visitors each year.

Leading this meticulous restoration and transformation are Stanton Williams and Asif Khan, working with conservation architects Julian Harrap. Undertaking a project of this scale and complexity requires immense effort and deep collaboration from many teams of the highest creative and technical abilities. Since joining the project in 2020, The Story Engineers have worked as part of this team of world-class architects, designers, media producers and project managers, shaping the technology design and helping to bridge the gap between historic spaces and modern storytelling.

“Working on this project for six years has allowed us to see the full arc of this transformation first-hand,” says Tom Spooner, Head of Project Management at The Story Engineers. “Being part of that journey, our role is to engineer a technology strategy that enables creative storytelling, whilst providing the museum with a flexible yet robust digital environment that will enhance every visitor’s experience when they open their doors in November, and for many years to come.”
