To mark its centennial, Delta Air Lines required a complete transformation of its historic 1940s hangars from static artifact repositories into a modern, dynamic visitor experience. In collaboration with master planners Imagine, The Story Engineers designed and integrated a sophisticated network of interactive systems, holographic displays, and projection mapping that brought a century of aviation heritage to life. Moving Beyond Static Display Cases at Delta Headquarters
Delta Air Lines approached their landmark centennial anniversary with a profound challenge: how to transform two historic 1940s maintenance hangars into a living, interactive environment. The existing exhibition space, while rich in heritage and built on the dedicated foundations of retirees, relied primarily on traditional static displays and rows of physical artifacts. The museum needed to evolve into a premier cultural destination capable of engaging modern audiences, inspiring future aviation professionals, and acting as a world-class corporate event space. This required shifting the entire environment away from an unyielding aircraft warehouse toward a multi-sensory journey. The team had to honour the memories of over 40 legacy airlines while introducing technical infrastructure that could showcase the true humanity, grit, and innovation of Delta’s first one hundred years.
Deploying Intelligent Infrastructure Inside Raw Aviation Hangars
The Story Engineers realised this ambitious creative vision by engineering an integrated suite of advanced technological installations across 68,000 square feet. In the Legacy Hangar, the journey opens with a synchronised multi-surface cinematic pre-show that concludes with the dramatic physical reveal of a crop duster aircraft. Across the exhibition floor, our engineers integrated custom gesture-based displays, a responsive movement-tracking mural, and a complex kinetic balance simulator. To transition visitors into the jet age within the Spirit Hangar, we developed specialised control and display networks supporting advanced holographic projections. This included mapping an intricate, life-sized digital narrative inside the historic Spirit of Delta Boeing 767 aircraft. Every system was fully commissioned off-site prior to venue installation, ensuring that complex media networks operated in total harmony.
Structural Technical Reliability Secures an Enduring Aviation Legacy
The newly reimagined Delta Flight Museum successfully opened its doors to immediate acclaim, demonstrating how technical precision can elevate historic preservation. By testing every technical choice against the visitor journey, the space now effortlessly handles heavy daily footfall from school field trips while remaining flexible enough to anchor premium private events. The advanced control infrastructure operates seamlessly in the live museum environment, keeping complex projection and sound systems frame-accurate day after day. More than a celebration of hardware, the resulting environment captures real emotional resonance, inspiring the next generation of pilots, mechanics, and engineers.
